SAM WANG | PRINCETON UNIVERSITY & ELECTORAL INNOVATION LAB

Sam Wang, Ph.D. is the founding director of the Electoral Innovation Lab, where he leads efforts to bring data-driven insight to the challenges of American democracy. A professor at Princeton University since 2000, Dr. Wang draws on a unique background in physics and neuroscience to bridge science, policy, and civic engagement. Over the past two decades, he has developed and led pioneering initiatives including the Princeton Election Consortium, the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, and Representable, all aimed at improving democratic representation through scientific rigor and public service.

Dr. Wang has forged partnerships with institutions such as the U.S. Census Bureau, the Department of Justice, and state officials including the Attorneys General of Maine and Ohio, and the Secretary of State of Michigan. His work has also supported nonpartisan civic groups such as RepresentUs, Fair Districts GA, OneVirginia2021, and Open Primaries.

As a technical consultant to both of New Jersey’s bipartisan redistricting commissions, he helped shape congressional and legislative maps adopted in 2021 and 2022. With his guidance, and the Electoral Innovation Lab’s expert support, the legislative map was approved by a historic bipartisan vote. Dr. Wang has also provided technical expertise in redistricting litigation in North Carolina, where he supported the special master in evaluating proposed district maps.
