National Business Leaders Call on Congress to Act: Oversight, Accountability, and Stability

In the wake of fatal federal actions in Minneapolis, business leaders urge Congress to defend the rule of law and democratic stability.

Recent actions leading to loss of life in Minneapolis make clear the need for immediate oversight and accountability at the Department of Homeland Security. The violent disregard for Americans’ constitutionally protected right to peaceful protest; the use of dangerous, escalatory, and illegal means of immigration enforcement; and this Administration’s refusal to investigate its conduct, choosing instead to reflexively defend it, represent a profound failure of leadership.

For generations, the United States has been both a global economic leader and a moral leader because of its commitment to constitutional rights, the rule of law, and legitimacy grounded in lawful accountability. The actions of this Administration directly threaten that foundation.

We call on Congress to act immediately to prevent continued unlawful and dangerous actions by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol. That includes a full public accounting of actions that have led to loss of life. Continued funding of ICE must be conditional on transparency and accountability.

Leadership Now has consistently spoken out against threats to the rule of law, recognizing that today’s economic competitiveness and democratic stability will define American leadership for the next 250 years.
